Northern Illinois Recap 10/4/2014

Northern Illinois Recap

The Reds traveled through Chicago to face Northern Illinois University for their second and final MAC crossover game. In cold, wet, and harsh wind the Reds would prepare to take down a team whom they lost to in 2012 and tied in 2013. With both previous games leaving a sour taste in the mouth, the Reds were out for revenge.

As the game started, both sides had trouble maintaining possession as the wind‘‘s unrelenting determination continued to sway the ball in air. After multiple attempts, the Reds worked their way downfield and touched down in the try zone for their first of six tries on the day, two more coming in the first half.

At the half, the Reds led 21-0

The second half began and the wind was in favor of NIU. The Reds were unable to relieve pressure effectively with kicks forcing them to play with a strong defensive front. The Reds held on to a goal line stand with ferocious defense for an extremely long possession before finally letting in a try by NIU.

The Reds responded by playing off a short NIU kickoff in which Kendall Pettygrove grabbed the loose ball and pinned his ears back for a 50 meter try to the corner. This would be Kendall‘‘s second try of the game in another Man of the Match performance by the Senior lock. Both teams would score twice more each leaving a final score of 36-17.

Undefeated

In a very physical game the Reds were pleased with a bonus point win to remain undefeated on the season. The Red‘‘s next game pits University of Cincinnati vs Miami on October 18 in the Reds‘‘ last home match of the season.
