MAC Tourney 11/8/2014
Nov 08, 2014 - MAC Tourney
Miami traveled to Elkhart, IN for the MAC divisional playoff hosted at the Moose Rugby Grounds.
Their first game of two that weekend was vs defending conference champs, Bowling Green. Bowling Green took an early lead off the kickoff - exploiting a gap within the Miami defensive line, 7-0. From this point on, the game took on a very physical nature. Breakaway runs were limited on either side and the game became a field possessional battle. After continuous minutes of head-to-head play, Miami was able to capitalize on two penalty conversions - both from 20 metres closing the score to, 7-6.
Slow and steady, Miami was gaining momentum after putting two consecutive scores on BG. After getting settled into the game, BG was able to set up a string of off-load runs to set up another first half try, 12-6 BG. Again, play began to pick up and set an aggressive tone. Positioned at the 10 metre line, Miami set up a rolling maul off of their line-out and punch through for a try to end the half 13-12, a Miami lead. Heading into half, Miami reinforced the issue of keeping consistent physicality and maintaing ball possession.
The second half started just as the first one had ended, with both teams taking shots at each other, but neither breaking the D line resulting in a score. Deep into the game BG started to find fluidity, finding multiple running lanes on overload situations. Taking their advantages BG was able to retake the lead 19-13. With spurts of gain line breaking runs Miami was able to drive BG within their own 22 on occasion, however unable to convert.
The relentless and quick attack of the BG wingers was the go-to scoring opportunity for the Falcons - adding another try from a scrum set piece 26-13 BG. Although posing an early threat to the Falcons conference title defense, Miami would fall to Bowling Green. Although solemn, Miami was proud of their performance and the strengths that were displayed that day. This would conclude the Miami Reds’ season, rendering them short of a MAC championship berth.
Connor Murray : ACRC All-American
In light of ending the season on a loss, we would like to offer Captain Connor Murray the greatest of congratulations on achieving ACRC All-American Awards this Fall 15s season. Connor represents the Miami University Rugby Club with the upmost integrity and pride both on and off the field. Connor was a powerhouse in the back-line scoring a try in almost every game and he is as precise as one could be kicking off the tee. Connor has undoubtedly left his mark on this club. His vision, mentality, and value for Miami Rugby will be carried on through future Miami Ruggers.
Again, an enormous thank you and much gratitude to all alumni and current players of the MURFC who make it a personal delight to be a part of this club.
